Ever since we first began trading, we’ve been active in the education sector providing flooring for schools. It’s a fascinating sector to work in.
From the outside, it might be tempting to think that it’s just a case of making classroom and corridor floors as child-resilient as possible – but that’s only scratching the surface. For a start, there’s the variety of educational establishments we work in; nurseries, schools, libraries, universities and so on.
Then there are the more specialist facilities; the remand schools, special schools, boarding schools and even university accommodation blocks. Yes, there are classrooms but there are also labs, play areas, canteens, libraries and so on. And we haven’t even mentioned the sports facilities yet.

Protecting Students With Flooring
Each of these educational and school settings places different demands on its flooring. Resilient, hard-wearing, anti-static, anti-bacterial, slip resistant or sound dampening; those are some of the basics.
But a floor might also need to be designed in such a way that the materials can’t be used by students who might look to self-harm.
It might need to be textured to assist partially-sighted students. And for some students with learning or mental health issues, certain floor patterns, designs or colours can cause anxiety, so these obviously need to be avoided as well.
Safeguarding & DBS
Across all our work, we always talk about operating within a controlled environment. That’s doubly important in a school setting.
All our staff are DBS checked and carry proof of this on the ID that they have with them at all times. Children are naturally inquisitive so we’re incredibly strict with how we use and store sharp implements, tools and potentially toxic materials.
We also pay close attention to the materials we use, in terms of how quickly they’ll dry, the odours they might create or the disruption they might cause.
For every newly built school building we help to maintain, there’s likely to be another, far older building where we need to be mindful of (and sympathetic to) its more dated design and construction. It’s just another consideration within a fascinating sector – and another reason why there’s no one-size-fits-all solution within education.
